| History of Lumpkin, Georgia |
|
Lumpkin came into being in 1829 and is built on lots 82 and 111 of the 23rd district. The town was named for Governor Wilson Lumpkin. The first courthouse was built in 1831 and was built of hewn logs and in 1836 when the Indians were on the warpath, it was used as a block house. The first post offices in 1836 were located at Lumpkin and Roanoke. Mail was carried by stagecoach. A route came from Americus to Eufaula via Lumpkin and Midway. (This is where Wade's store is.) After 1840, the
growth of the county was rapid. Permanent settlers came, built homes,
established churches and schools, cleared the land and began an economy
that was sound and good. |
